Zoetermeer is the third largest city in South Holland and was founded in 1000 AD as a fishing village on a sweet lake. The lake was drained in 1614, but the name Zoetermeer remained. The city of Zoetermeer is actually made up of ten different villages within its borders. There is still an old town with some historic buildings, including a church with a wooden bell tower from the 15th century. Zoetermeer is characterized by the first snow-covered indoor ski slope in Europe.
