Lourdes is the largest Catholic pilgrimage site in France. Many religious tourists arrive at the place every year, some simply do so by plane. Others make it a pilgrimage site by walking there. The city is known for Bernadette Soubirous. In 1856, she was a 14-year-old girl who saw apparitions in a cave in the shape of the Virgin Mary. In 1864, a statue was erected in honor of the Virgin Mary and since then it has been a busy place to pray for people.
