Erfurt is the capital of the German state of Thuringia. It is in the middle of Germany. The city was officially named in 742 by missionary Boniface, who founded a diocese there. The city’s figurehead is therefore the impressive Romanesque-Gothic cathedral. Erfurt has had a university since 1392 and in the Middle Ages it was one of the largest in Germany. Erfurt suffered little damage from the Second World War and as a result the historic city center is well preserved.
