Cuxhaven is a port city and at the same time a seaside resort. The harbor is on the east side of the city and the beaches are on the west. In 1872 the village of Ritzebuttel decided to join Cuxhaven. The old Ritzebuttel Castle was also seen as part of the port city. The island of Neuwerk lies off the coast of Cuxhaven. You can reach the island on foot. When the tide is high you can only reach it by ferry.
