Ieper is a historic city in the southwest of the Belgian province of West Flanders. The city’s origins date back to the Middle Ages and was best known for the Cloth Hall. During World War I, the city was surrounded by German troops on three sides, while British defenders defended the city from the inside. There were no less than 4 major battles in which the German troops tried to overwhelm the city, but they were unsuccessful. Ieper suffered enormous damage from the battle and there are many monuments and memorials around the city honoring the fallen soldiers.
